San Carlos is a quaint residential suburb situated comfortably in San Mateo County, California. It sits halfway between San Francisco and San Jose, as well as located between Belmont to the north and Redwood City to the south. With a population of approximately 28,400 people, its leaders are dedicated to maintaining a "small town" feel. Though mostly residential, the downtown area is mainly comprised of small shops and restaurants. San Carlos is the first city in the state to establish a charter school, San Carlos Charter Learning Center. Even though the Spanish had controlled the area for some time, it would be the California Gold Rush of 1849 that attracted the first non-Spanish settlers to the region. In those days they were called "squatters," since they were technically there illegally. Nevertheless, the Spanish were virtually powerless to stop the influx of European Americans looking to stake their claim on gold deposits. The Argüello family realized early on that to protect their land deed it would be best to transfer governance to the United States. Then, in the 1850s, the Argüello family started selling lots through an agent named S. M. Mezes.

Furthermore, residents and tourist enjoy visiting Filoli in the city of Woodside, which is an early 20th-century country-style house sitting on 16 acres and boasts beautiful formal gardens that are surrounded an estate comprised of 654 acres. Interestingly, the Filoli mansion was seen from the from the air at the beginning of the Dynasty television show in the 1980s. And with cities like San Francisco and San Jose so nearby, it is quite easy to spend a weekend with friends or family visiting places such as Winchester Mystery House located at 525 South Winchester Boulevard. This larger-than-life Queen Anne Style Victorian mansion is designated as a California historical landmark and has been in numerous television shows and movies. In addition to that, there is California's Great America located at 4701 Great America Parkway and is a 100-acre amusement park thrill rides that include the Berserker, Celebration Swings, Centrifuge, and Delirium, among a few others.
