Downtown San Jose is the central business district of San Jose, California. The downtown area was first settled in 1787 when San Jose moved inland from the original location along the Guadalupe River. The downtown was small like in most agricultural cities until major expansion took place in the 1950s and 1960s. However, when San Jose started moving outward, downtown growth declined. In the 1980s renovation began, with some historic buildings being destroyed in order to allow for hotels, condominiums, office spaces, parks, and theaters. Streets were also widened, and parking lots and garages built. Downtown also is home to many network service providers as well as Internet service providers. Today buildings in Downtown San Jose cannot go above 27 stories because they are near the flight path from the airport. Downtown San Jose business district has the zip code of 95113 while the some of the residential areas are now inside the downtown core are covered by zip codes 95112, 95110, 95112, and 95113.

Young people are moving downtown and enjoying the art festivals, the cafes and upscale eateries within walking distance from their homes. Downtown San Jose residents are active in civic engagement. There are some two dozen neighborhood associations, and there are neighborhoods that still have pre-1906 housing. Downtown San Jose nightlife provides live music and dancing in many establishments. There are also breweries and dive bars to explore. Daytime can be spent exploring the landmarks, parks, and streams, as well as the shops and cafes.
